How can TOEFL help me?

TOEFL is for students whose native language is not English and need to:

What is on the TOEFL Test?

TOEFL Test Sections

There are 4 sections on the test: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

Reading

30–40 QUESTIONS | 54–72 MINUTES

This section measures your ability to read and understand texts and passages that university students encounter in courses. All test questions are based on the information provided in the passages, so you are not required to have any background knowledge on a specific academic topic to answer them.  

Speaking

4 TASKS | 17 MINUTES

This section measures your ability to read and understand texts and passages that university students encounter in courses. All test questions are based on the information provided in the passages, so you are not required to have any background knowledge on a specific academic topic to answer them.  

Listening

28–39 QUESTIONS | 41–57 MINUTES

The Listening section of the TOEFL measures your ability to understand English as it is spoken in academic settings, including conversations between a student and a professor or a university staff member as well as lectures on various academic-related topics.  


Writing

2 TASKS | 50 MINUTES

The Writing section measures your ability to write in English within an academic setting. You are expected to be able to write about what you have heard in lectures or read in textbooks (integrated writing). You must also be able to express your own opinion and support it based on your knowledge and experience (independent writing).


Preparing for the test

Many resources are available to prepare for the TOEFL test. You may choose to get ready on your own by practicing with the test format if you already have developed a level of English proficiency in your reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
